OPIUM WARLORDS (We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky) LP/CD
OPIUM WARLORDS is one of the numerous projects of former Reverend Bizarre bassist/vocalist Sami Albert Hynninen. Released in 2012 by Svart Records, 'We Meditate Under The Pussy In The Sky' has very little in common with cliched doom metal. Instead, this record is probably about as unexpected as it could be. Sometimes when I listen to the 5 songs, I get the feeling that Hynninen was on a strict Naked City/Khanate diet.
Unfortunately, OPIUM WARLORDS' weird charm soon gives way to much undercooked experimentation, leaving the entire listening experience a bit to be desired. Well, this album certainly has it's moments, but the impression of listening to an average talented art student outweighs the good moments. 'Satan Knew My Secret Heart', for instance, is just plain dull and very artsy fartsy.
The opener 'Sxi-Meru' does a better job with its abstract Eastern ambience. If I wouldn't know it better, I would think that it's an unreleased track from Naked City's 'Absinthe' album. Sometimes the music gets heavier, but lacks the necessary intensity in order to ensure effective results. Basically, 'Lament For The Builders Of Khara Khoto' could be something very good with its heavy, sludgy riffs if it would be from Khanate. Well, one can admire the idea or vision of this album but I have to say that I don't like it much, and I like a lot of experimental music.
